The Forever War at Escape Velocity

Museum of Science Fiction

March 27, 2017

Dear science fiction fans,

As Escape Velocity 2017 approaches (now less than six months away!), we are beginning to finalize more guests, programming, and exhibits, so expect show updates to start accelerating from here on out. With a new Star Trek TV series and Star Wars film both coming out this year, 2017 promises to be an exciting time for science fiction fans. We hope you’ll celebrate it with us at EV17, so please read on to see just some of our latest announcements.

Best regards,

Greg Viggiano
Executive Director

Joe Haldeman and Forever War
We’re delighted to have Joe Haldeman join us this year. The Forever War is widely acclaimed as being the greatest military science fiction novel ever written. This year’s literary track promises to be evocative and provocative – and make us think about where we may be going as human beings. “The Forever War is more than a harbinger; it represents a multidimensional warning for us to outgrow war and regrettably seems to be in perfect resonance with our current state of global affairs.” – Charles Hildebrandt, production counsel for the Museum of Science Fiction.

Solar Eclipse Celebration

Last month we told you about the total solar eclipse that will occur on August 21 over the continental United States. Space science fans are already planning viewing parties for this rare event (the next eclipse won’t happen again until 2024). Although the DC area is not directly in the path of totality, the Museum will still celebrate it by hosting a free screening of Pitch Black on April 11 at American University with an introductory talk by Dr. Sten Odenwald, NASA heliophyiscist.

Geppi’s at EV17
Our friends from Geppi’s Entertainment Museum were one of the big hits at last year’s Escape Velocity and they’ll be back by popular demand at EV17. Besides showcasing some of their rare memorabilia, expect the team to join several panels and speak on a variety of pop culture entertainment topics.

Starship Horizons
Starship Horizons is a multi-player bridge simulation experience allowing 2-6 players to work together as the ship’s bridge officers. The core gameplay experience is designed around players commanding their own starship as the bridge officers in the roles of Captain, Flight, Tactical, Science, Engineering, and Operations. Register here in advance to play or sign up at the convention: http://starshiphorizons.com/events/event.aspx?id=51

Missions will run throughout EV17. To learn more about the game, check out: http://www.starshiphorizons.com and http://www.facebook.com/starshiphorizons
